ST. SIMONS ISLAND — Tiftarea Academy started its swim season Nov. 22 with varsity and junior varsity competing at Frederica Academy.
Head coach Cindy Harbort said she had many returnees to the program, led by seniors Carrie Engram, Elissa Singer and Allison Carter. There are some new additions to both varsity and junior varsity rosters.
Finding opportunities for them to compete is going to be difficult.
“With COVID affecting all aspects of this year’s sports, swim is no different,” said Harbort in an email. “There are so many rules and regulations added because of the COVID situation that many schools are unable to accommodate the mass number of teams it has allowed in the past. This, in turn, affects how many meets that we will be able to participate in and qualify for, for the state swim meet in late January.”
Currently, Harbort said that only three meets remain on the schedule. Only one is varsity.
They have made the most of the situation. Twenty swimmers have already qualified for state in all three of their events, said Harbort.
“Marlie Cox (Tiftarea assistant coach) and I are extremely proud of their dedication, especially when we have asked them to swim at night during these cold nights for practice,” said Harbort. The Panthers practice at the Tiftarea YMCA pool.
“We are working on hosting a couple of meets to help with the shortage of meets in the area.”
Tiftarea’s Lady Panthers finished seventh in varsity competition. Tiftarea boys and girls combined to finish third. The junior varsity teams excelled as well, both placing second.
