BRUNSWICK — Tiftarea Academy competed at the Coastal Georgia Invitational swim meet Jan. 9, sending a handful of swimmers to Brunswick.
Head coach Cindy Harbort said the Lady Panthers were fifth and the meet and the Panthers were sixth.
Twenty swimmers have qualified for the season for the state meet. Harbort said a decision on a championship will be made later this week. For now, Tiftarea has a a region swim meet Jan. 21 in Waycross. The middle school will finish up in Waycross this weekend.
At the Coastal Georgia meet, Carrie Engram had the best finish of any Tiftarea swimmer. She was second in the 500 freestyle, completing the race in 6:31.
Engram, who also finished eighth in the 100 butterfly, was not the only Panthers swimmer to do well. Logan Floyd had a pair of top fives, fourth in the 200 individual medley and fifth in the 100 butterfly. In the 500 freestyle, Engram’s teammates of Hallie Haggard and Gigi Kendrick were fourth and fifth, respectively.
“We are extremely proud of all our swimmers this year,” said Harbort.
Those finishing in the top 10 were:
Boys 200 individual medley: Logan Floyd (4th).
Boys 100 butterfly: Floyd (5th).
Girls 100 butterfly: Engram (8th).
Girls 500 freestyle: Hallie Haggard (4th) and Gigi Kendrick (5th).
Others competing were: Allison Carter, Whitney Hancock, Natalie Johnson, Lily Rodgers, Rhett Rogers and John Robert Walker,
