CHULA - Tiftarea Academy has played its last regular season basketball games. Thursday's scheduled home games with Crisp Academy have been cancelled because of the threat of bad weather, according to Panthers basketball coach Mike Patrick.
"The first time I've ever had a Senior Night cancelled," said Patrick. The games won't be made up as Crisp Academy already has an opponent scheduled Friday.
Tentative plans are to recognize the senior basketball players next Tuesday before the teams travel to Valwood for the GISA Region 3-AAA play-in games. Both Tiftarea's boys and girls will face Valwood. The winners move on in the region tournament and also qualify for the upcoming state tournament.
Tiftarea's boys split games with Valwood this season, which as it was played Tuesday, turned out to be their contest of the regular season. They notched their first win of the season in Chula in January, but fell 80-76 on the road.
Patrick noted his team was down 42-16 at halftime, but nearly came back with a wild second half. The Panthers scored 30 points in both the third and fourth quarters, but it was not quite enough to overtake the Valiants.
The Lady Panthers wound up their regular season schedule with a 66-47 victory over Valwood. They won both games in the series this year.
