TIFTON -- The Tift County Blue Devils and Lady Devils swept the Irwin County Indians and the Lady Indians in Tuesday tennis action. The Lady Devils won 3-2, while the Devils took a 5-0 win.
Becky Alt, 6-1, 6-1 at number one, and Whitney Lightfoot, 6-0, 6-0 at number two, were Tift's singles winners. Claire Slocum and Marcy Shiver won 6-0, 6-2 also won for Tift at number two doubles.
Irwin's Laura Snyder, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 defeated Tift's Sarah Dutcher at number three singles. At number one doubles, Kayla Carver and Emily Williams defeated Amanda Lawler and Rachel Lawler, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, to capture Irwin's other win.
In the boys match, Tift's Jacob Sauls, 6-1, 6-0 at number one; Jarred Sauls, 6-0, 6-2 at number two; and John Bowen, 6-1, 6-1 at number three, all won their singles matches.
Bo Gray and Daniel Ericksen won at number one doubles for Tift, 6-2, 6-2; while Jay Lawler and Russ Vann took the victory at number two doubles for the Devils, 6-2, 6-0.
Over the weekend, the Tift County teams participated in the Valdosta "Wildcat Invitational" tournament.
In the two-day event, the Lady Devils finished third, while the Devils took fourth overall. There were 13 teams involved in the event.
The Tift Lady Devils faced three Region 1-AAAAA foes at the tournament. Tift defeated Lee 4-1, lost to Colquitt 4-1 and closed things out with a 5-0 win over Lowndes.
Alt, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 at number one, and Lightfoot, 6-2, 7-5 at number two, were singles winners.
Rachel Lawler and Kristen Powell won 6-3, 7-5 at number one doubles, while Slocum and Leah Taylor were 6-1, 6-2 winners at number two.
Against Colquitt, Amanda Lawler joined sister Rachel in winning at number one doubles, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. That was Tift's only win in the match.
The Lawlers, 6-3, 6-0 at number one, as well as the team of Slocum and Shiver, 6-4, 6-3 at number two, won doubles matches against Lowndes.
Singles winners were Alt, 6-3, 6-0 at number one; Lightfoot, 6-1, 6-1 at number two; and Dutcher, 6-1, 7-5 at number three.
The Devils defeated Lowndes and Fitzgerald and were beaten by Ware County and Ware Magnet.
Against Region 1-AAAAA foe Lowndes High, the Devils were 4-1 winners.
Taking wins in singles matches for Tift were Jarred Sauls at number two, 7-5, 6-4, and Bowen at number three, 6-0, 6-2. Also winning were the doubles teams of Gray and Bill Bush, 6-2, 6-2 at number one; as well as Lawler and Chris Shelton, 6-4, 7-6 at number two.
Tift also defeated Fitzgerald by a 4-1 score.
Jacob Sauls, 6-1, 6-7, 6-2 at number one, and Bowen, 6-3, 6-2 at number two, were Tift's singles winners.
Gray and Ericksen were 6-2, 6-2 winners at number one doubles. Lawler and Vann took the number two doubles match by a 6-1, 6-7, 6-3 score.
Going against Ware County, Tift fell 3-2.
Both wins for the Devils came in doubles play. Gray and Andrew Haynes took the number one match, 6-4, 6-2, while Lawler and Andrew McGhin won at number two, 6-3, 6-4.
Doubles also came up big for the Devils against Ware Magnet. Tift was defeated 3-2 with again both wins coming in doubles play.
Gray and Knox Johnson won 6-4, 6-4 at number one, while Lawler and Will Doubery, 6-2, 6-0.
