THOMASTON — Mere hours after hearing appeals for reclassification, the Georgia High School Association released a preliminary list of regions Thursday evening.
As expected, Tift County landed in Region 1-6A, along with Houston County, Lee County, Northside of Warner Robins, Thomas County Central and Veterans.
All five region opponents are within 90 minutes of Tifton and all are teams they know well. They have previously been region competitors of Houston, Lee, Northside and TCC. However, with Thomas County Central, the Blue Devils were in a different sub-region when both were in Region 1-AAAA from 1978-85. Veterans opened in 2010, but has played Tift in seemingly every sport except football.
The GHSA’s proposed Region 1-AA keeps Berrien, Cook, Fitzgerald and Worth County together, but added three new names after the departures of Thomasville and Early County. Joining the region are Bacon County, Brantley County and Jeff Davis. All have been region opponents at some time, though not before in this exact combination.
Region 2-A for 2022-24 looks to remain completely unchanged, with Irwin County and Turner County combined with Atkinson County, Brooks County, Charlton County, Clinch County, Echols County and Lanier County.
Tift County’s old region, 1-7A added a considerable bit of travel time with a new school, Richmond Hill. Both Richmond Hill and Camden County lost appeals to move to 6A and thus will be with Colquitt County, Lowndes and Valdosta.
