TIFTON — The Tift County All-Stars finished second in the Georgia Recreation and Park Association 10U baseball tournament, which wrapped at E.B. Hamilton Complex Friday.
Tift fell to Calhoun, 10-8. The tournament was double elimination and Calhoun had previously won against Tift County in the semifinals Thursday.
The local squad, visitors on the scoreboard, pushed four runs across the plate in the top of the first inning. Calhoun immediately answered with two runs in the first, then tied it in the second frame with two more.
After Calhoun went ahead 5-4 in the third inning, the game became a battle of offenses.
Tift County scored in the fourth to tie it at 5, the Calhoun went back up 6-5. The All-Stars went up 7-6 in the top of the fifth, with the go-ahead run a single by Eli Schuckebier that drove in Junior Hill. Calhoun struck back with four tallies, giving them a 10-7 advantage.
Tripp King had Tift’s final RBI, a two-out single to drive in Jishaun Robinson. That cut the lead to 10-8, but Calhoun held firm for the final out and first place.
Tift had battled into the finals by defeating Dublin-Laurens, 10-9, in an elimination game Thursday afternoon. They had started the GRPA with a 16-0 victory over Butts County, followed by a 26-1 win against Clayton County.
Members of the Tift County All-Stars were: Rafael Gonzalez, Colt Hartsfield, Cully Hendley, Hill, Reed Jackson, Porter Johnson, King, Carter McMahan, Ty Roberts, Robinson, Schluckebier, Garrett Wade, and Duncan Walker. The All-Stars were coached by J.L. King, Billy Hendley and Greg Wade.
