TIFTON — It has been a good year for former area baseball players.
Cade Marlowe, a Tiftarea Academy alumnus, recently merited the 2019 Gulf South Conference Commissioner’s Trophy. The awards, which honor the top male and female athlete in the conference, were announced Thursday at the GSC Annual Awards Banquet in Pensacola Beach, Fla.
This week was also big for another athlete, Connor Thomas.
A Tift County graduate for who currently pitches for Georgia Tech, Thomas was named second team All-American by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.
During the regular season, Thomas was twice named Pitcher of the Week in the ACC. He was expected to start Saturday against Auburn in the NCAA Atlanta Regional. Through Friday, he had a 9-1 record with an ERA of 3.28. He threw the most innings for the Yellow Jackets in 2019 and his 97 strikeouts were 30 more than anyone else on the roster. In ACC games, his ERA dipped to 2.86.
Both players are possibilities in the Major League Baseball draft, which starts Monday.
The last Tift County player chosen in the draft was Alex Abbott, who was selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the sixth round in 2014. No Tiftarea Academy player has ever been selected.
