TIFTON — Spring sports are going on in abundance at area high schools, as well as Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. That also means it is time for the Tift County Recreation Department to get involved with spring action.

Baseball and softball are tentatively set to begin March 31.

The schedules are tentative, because of travel baseball, as well as work being done at the E.B. Hamilton Complex.

TCRD Director Craig Sowell said representatives of travel baseball teams wanted a chance to play on the rec department fields.

“They don’t want any conflicts with travel baseball,” said Sowell of the representatives.

The tentative plans will mean rec department teams will see their action limited on Saturdays during the spring to accommodate travel baseball.

“We won’t play more than 50 percent of the eligible Saturdays,” said Sowell.

Even with that, it promises to a busy time for the rec department.

If work is completed at the Hamilton Complex, there will be a Peach State Diamond Sports Baseball program there April 5-6. A softball tournament is also tentatively set for April 12.

Another softball event is set for April 26, while another Peach State baseball event is set for May 17-18.

After another softball event May 31, the Friendly City All-Star Classic will be held June 7 pending team availability. Then on June 14-15, there will be another Peach State Diamond Sports baseball event.

The rec department is also set to host the GRPA District 3 B/C Swim Meet July 12, as well as the state swim meet, July 25-26.

There will be numerous other events, as well during the summer.
