TIFTON — Tift County will host an early season golf tournament Saturday, with the Spring Hill Ryder Cup coming to town.
Tift County boys golf coach Marc Beach is advising everyone to dress warmly for the event. Saturday’s low temperature is predicted at 41 degrees and the tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
The Spring Hill Ryder Cup will feature a north versus south theme. Six schools are southern, five northern.
Besides Tift, southerners are Coffee, Colquitt County, Lowndes, Pierce County and Valwood. Northerners are Snellville’s Brookwood, Buford, Harris, North Gwinnett and … Valdosta. Beach said he was short a northern team and Valdosta agreed to represent.
Practice has just started for the Blue Devils. Freshman Bo Carpenter is currently playing at No. 1, but Beach advised the season is still young. The team he brings back has experience. Brady Walker, Jacob Beach, Jobe Warren, Jake Fountain, Drew Hall and Jake Hasty all played at the state tournament last May. Hall is out currently with an injury, but Beach hopes to have him back in a couple of weeks.
After this early action, the Blue Devils will take in another tournament next week, playing at the Camden Classic at Kingsland’s Osprey Cove course. Other regular season tournaments this year as the Lee County Trojan Invitational, the Atlanta Area Classic, the Hardaway Invitational, Valdosta’s Dynamite Goodloe tournament, the Packer Invitational, the C.D. Moore Blue Devil Invitational in Tifton, the Neil Graham Invitational and the MCI Tournament in Columbus.
The Lady Devils will play their first tournament March 2 in Douglas.
