TIFTON — Spring sports had its first signing of the 2020 portion of the school year Wednesday afternoon. Soccer player Lupe Osorio signed with Point University.
Tift head coach Zac Martin said it was “a pleasure” to have coached Osorio during her high school career. “I’ve enjoyed watching you become the soccer player you’ve become,” he said.
The ceremony was attended by Osorio’s future head coach, Randy Douglas. He said he was drawn to her work ethic. “She’s a versatile player,” said Douglas.
Osorio has been a striker and played in the midfield for Tift.
Athletic director Rusty Smith advised Osorio to use the soccer scholarship she’s getting to further her educational career.
“I’m proud of her,” said Smith.
Osorio was the last to speak during the ceremony.
“Thank all of you for coming out and supporting me,” she said, specifically thanking her parents, coaches and teammates for their help.
Point reached the quarterfinals of the Appalachian Athletics Conference tournament last fall. Osorio was named All-Region honorable mention in 2019.
