TIFTON — It is not often that you can dominate your opponent on the scoreboard and still see room for improvement. But, that was the case for the Tift County Lady Devils soccer team Thursday afternoon.

Playing in the first round of the state Class AAAAA tournament, Tift got an 11-0 victory over the Riverdale Lady Raiders. However, the Lady Devils’ margin of victory could have been greater as Tift had several shots that just missed the goal or hit the goal posts.

“It pretty much went as I expected,” said Tift head coach Ann Herzog.

“But, we are going to have to do a much better job of finishing in the next round. We didn’t finish enough of our plays today and I am a little disappointed in that.”

The Lady Devils advance to the second round of the state playoffs to face the Lady Tigers of Fayette County Wednesday evening at Brodie Field. Fayette defeated Windsor Forest 2-0 on a pair of penalty kicks.

Things went so well early on for the Lady Devils that Maggie Crowley had a hat trick within the first seven minutes of the match. She scored goals at 36:06, 35:35 and 33:44. The last one was assisted by Laura Leidner.

Leidner later assisted Kendall Couch on Tift’s fourth goal with 26:17 left in the first half. The Lady Devils closed out the scoring in the first half with goals from Ronni Smith with 25:43 remaining and from Couch with 1:57 left.

Using an assist from Natalie Barber, Couch opened up the second half scoring with 35:33 left. Couch later scored her fourth goal with 28:25 left in the game.

Liz Wiggins scored with 11:06 remaining. Jennifer Jones added the 10th goal with 6:56 remaining.

Senior Cassie Couch finally closed out the scoring with just over two minutes left in the match.

“The good thing about today is that everyone got a chance to play,” Herzog said.
