TIFTON -- The Eighth Street Middle School seventh grade boys and girls basketball teams each finished second in the South Georgia Athletic Conference Tournament played here this past weekend.
The Lady Devils fell to Colquitt 23-16 while the Blue Devils lost to Coffee 54-45. The girls advanced to the championship game with a 25-15 win over Coffee Middle. The boys made it to the final game via a 5-19 win over Valdosta Middle School.
"They were really talented offensive rebounders," said boys head coach Jim Torell of the Coffee team.
Against the Trojans, Eighth Street's Michael Fowler and Kenneth Moore each had 15 points. Anthony Bryant added seven.
"Moore never came off the floor," said Torell.
Fowler had 15 against Valdosta while Moore scored 12. Bryant, Ta Mallory and Marcel Green each scored six against the Wildcats.
The Eighth Street boys finished the year at 12-3.
"All three losses were Coffee," said Torell. "We got closer and closer each time we played them."
Rebecca Johnson led the Lady Devils in the semifinals game with 15 points.
Cassie Jones and Shaquanna Wilson each had four points.
Johnson also paced the Eighth Street girls with six points in the championship game. Kelly Redlinger added three.
In other Eighth Street Middle School action, the eighth grade girls defeated Newbern Middle 31-20 during the weekend. Tasha Woods led Eighth Street with 11 points.
The Devils take on Colquitt today in Moultrie.
