TIFTON -- The personnel committee of the Tift County Board of Education is scheduled to meet today with candidates for the vacant Tift County High head football coach's job. The special committee is scheduled to meet with prospective candidates at 4 p.m. at the high school.

According to Tift County school board chairman Erick Willis, the committee will talk to candidates from the current staff at the meeting.

"We won't know how many will show up for interviews until the meeting time," Willis said. "There has been nothing decided. The board voted to talk to candidates from the current staff first and that is what we are going to do."

He went on to add, "right now, we are taking it one day at a time."

The position became open when Tommy Seward resigned from the post earlier this month. The board then voted 4-3 to look at candidates on Seward's staff, before opening the job up to other interested coaches.

Under Seward in 2004, the Devils were 5-5. Tift finished 1-4 in Region 1-AAAAA, but lost two games by a combined seven points and one game in overtime.

Seward was a long time assistant to the late head football coach Gene Brodie. Following Brodie's retirement, Seward accepted the offensive coordinator's position with the Houston County Bears before returning to Tifton four years ago.

During the 2002 football season, Seward led the Blue Devils to their first playoff appearance since advancing to the Class AAAA state championship game against the Parkview Panthers in 1997.
