TIFTON —Josh Allen, one of Tift County’s head track and field coaches, said he knew it was going to be a special year. He had reason to smile even more Wednesday with the performance of Cade Anders at a quad meet in Tifton.

Anders set what is believed to be a new school record in shot put: 55’6”. Anders said he was told the old mark was 55’5”.

Naturally, it’s a personal record for the Army football commit. Anders said he previously hit 50’4” before.

And it might be the shoes. Seriously, the shoes.

Anders laughed when trying to come up with a reason for the surge.

“I got new shoes,” he said.

More seriously, Anders is aiming for stop spot in May’s Class 7A state championship. Like other athletes, his season was cut short in 2020. As a sophomore, Anders was ninth in the 2019 finals. His throw that year was 48’8.25”. Wednesday’s record put him among the top of the state.

Anders was not the only one excelling at the quad meet, which was cut short by storm clouds. Tift and surrounding counties spent the evening in a thunderstorm watch and raindrops were felt during the last event, the boys 800 run.

Among the events not run were the 200, mile and 4x400 relays. Tift was joined by Turner County, Irwin County, Worth County, Cook and Dodge County at the meet.

Sky McCrae won the 400 in 1:07. KaLiyah Barber was first in the 100 and 300 hurdles, in times of 17.97 seconds and 50.23, respectively. Caitlyn Burgess had an easy time clearing 5’2” to win high jump. Cali Conner cleared 9’6” to take the pole vault. Bailee Williams threw 30’1” to earn first in shot put.

The Blue Devils won the 800 with Trevor Gebhart (2:21) and 3,200 with Blair Golden (11:18).

Kyrossity Robinson was the fastest in the 110 hurdles at 17.24 seconds and the 300 hurdles at 42.85 seconds. At 43.37 seconds, the Tift County 4x100 team won their event by just over one second. Davis Garner’s height of 10’6” won pole vault.
