TIFTON — The Tift County Blue Devils secured themselves another trip to the state Class AAAAA basketball playoffs Saturday night with a 50-41 win over the Lowndes High Vikings in Valdosta.

The win secures the Devils the second seed in the Region 1-AAAAA tournament. With that seed, Tift gets a bye into the region semifinals Friday in Douglas. The final four teams all go to the state playoffs, so that means Tift is in the state tournament.

Shawn Lawson led the Devils against Lowndes with 16 points. Jonas Brown added 13, and Adonis Whitehead scored 10.

On the girls side, the Lady Devils fell 46-37 to Lowndes.

That means Tift will have to face Colquitt Thursday in the region tournament in Douglas. If the Lady Devils win, they will also earn a trip to the state playoffs.

Stephanie Brownlee and Lindsay Welker led the Lady Devils against Lowndes with 10 points apiece. Jessi Byrnes also scored seven for the Tift squad.

In the junior varsity girls game, the Lady Devils completed a 15-0 season with a 54-27 win over Lowndes.

Tionna Barnes had eight points to lead the jayvee squad, while Alexandria Covington and Blair Savelli scored six points apiece. Dreka Burgess also added five to the Tift cause.
