TIFTON — The Tift County Blue Devils got their first basketball test Tuesday night under new head coach Xavier Holmes.
The Devils took on Worth County in a scrimmage and with Quay High setting the pace with an opening three-pointer, Tift went on to a 70-40 victory.
High's three came 20 seconds into the game. The Rams countered with a basket from Keontae Moore and hung with Tift for the first part of the opening quarter. Ben Jackson's three at 3:56 gave them a 9-7 lead, but the Devils rallied and never stopped.
High gave the locals a permanent lead at 10-9. Jatarion Warren scored back-to-back baskets, which included a dunk off a High assist at 1:35. When M.J. Morrow scored with 18 seconds remaining, Tift had Worth doubles at 18-9.
Worth went nine minutes between baskets before Moore broke the silence. By this point, it was too late. Jyamier Beckhom scored five second quarter points and High added six. Bryce Marta buried a three at the end of the half to make it 36-16.
Long shots were the Devils' specialty for the night. They hit 10 over four quarter. Three fell in the third period from three different players - High, Warren and Marta. The 20-point lead extended further, to 51-25 going into the fourth.
Tift substituted often throughout Tuesday's scrimmage, but everyone hit the floor in the fourth. Kobee Smith scored six points and the Rams had seven players accumulate points in that span.
Holmes said he thought his squad played well. He was impressed with High and thought Beckhom had his moments.
Warren led all scorers with 16 points. High added 14 and Beckhom scored 12. Worth got 11 points from Moore and nine from Jackson.
