IRVING, Texas (AP) — Major League Baseball plunged into its first work stoppage in a quarter-century when the sport’s collective bargaining agreement expired Wednesday night and owners immediately locked out players in a move that threatens spring training and opening day.

THOMASTON — The Georgia High School Association held a Class A committee meeting Tuesday. The Class A committee opted to step forward with one proposal, but their plan would have to approved by the rest of the classification committee to proceed.

WAYCROSS - There were two close calls Tuesday evening, with Tift County splitting basketball decisions against Ware County.

CHULA — As one sports season concludes, another one begins at Tiftarea Academy. The Panthers and Lady Panthers open the basketball season Tuesday at home against Crisp Academy.

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Tiftarea Academy Panthers faced John Milledge Academy, the undefeated defending champions, in the semifinals Friday night with hopes of making it to the championship game in Macon this week. However, the Panthers were stopped short and fell to the Trojans 49-13.

ATLANTA (AP) — Stetson Bennett passed for 255 yards and four touchdowns, including two to tight end Brock Bowers, and No. 1 Georgia finished its undefeated regular season by overwhelming Georgia Tech 45-0 on Saturday.

TIFTON — Ask any Georgia high school football coach and he will tell you that he will trade a Thanksgiving break for practicing. If a team is having to moderate its turkey and pie, that means it is deep into the state playoffs.

COLUMBUS — Tift County’s Lady Devils opened the 2021-22 basketball season Saturday with a 55-47 victory over Northside of Columbus at G.W. Carver High School.

TIFTON — The Tift County Lady Devils open their regular basketball season Saturday afternoon in Columbus. At 2 p.m., they take on Northside of that city i the G.W. Carter High School Tip-Off Classic.

THOMASTON — Class A remains in limbo after the Georgia High School Association opted not to go forward with any plans for reorganization.

TIFTON — Tiftarea Academy’s Pool Panthers won individually and they won as a team Wednesday in a home swim meet at the Tiftarea YMCA.

THOMASTON — Tift County’s new region, 1-6A, looks to be set in stone, as does nearly every other South Georgia region as the Georgia High School Association prepares to hold region appeals Thursday.

THOMASVILLE – Thomas County Central will have a new football coach when the Yellow Jackets move into Class 6A next year.

THOMASVILLE — Another week, another Tift County swimming sweep. At Saturday’s Dean Farrell Invitational in Thomasville, the boys and girls of the Swim Devils won again at a meet that featured six high school teams.

TIFTON — Tift County’s middle school swim teams got off to a hot start Nov. 8 at the Baldwin Drive Aquatic Center and never cooled. The Swim Devils won 15 of 24 events for the afternoon and finished second in 12 of them, giving them a pair of easy victories in the five-team meet.

TIFTON - Saturday's games were only scrimmages, but the Tift County Blue Devils and Lady Devils can only be pleased with the results. The teams swept Carver of Columbus, with the girls earning a 59-57 decision in overtime and the boys breezing to a 57-28 win over the Tigers.

MARIETTA - Jackson Strickland had his best passing game of the 2021 season, but it was the Marietta Blue Devils who advance to the second round of the Class 7A state tournament. Marietta defeated Tift County, 28-14, at Northcutt Stadium.

THOMASTON — Mere hours after hearing appeals for reclassification, the Georgia High School Association released a preliminary list of regions Thursday evening.

TIFTON — At the end of Friday, a group of Blue Devils will be crowned victors of a first round football match at Northcutt Stadium. Whether that that group if Tift County or whether it is Marietta will have to be determined.

TIFTON — Eden Troxell’s star has always burned bright. On Nov. 10, it turned into a flame as the Tift County athlete signed to swim with Liberty University.

TIFTON — Georgia high school state tournaments get started this week, sending many of the state’s schools to the football fields where the goal is a simple one: Win or go home.

CHULA — Family means much to Tiftarea Academy’s Hayden Murphy. The senior baseball player was surrounded by family Wednesday morning as he signed a baseball scholarship with Auburn. And it was the family environment at Auburn, said Murphy, that influenced his decision.

TIFTON — Tift County High’s swim debut at the Baldwin Drive Aquatic Center was quite the success Tuesday evening. The Swim Devils swept competition in a four-team meet to start 2021 with a bang.

TIFTON — Last week’s drop in temperature can only mean a few things in southern Georgia: real football weather and that basketball is on the horizon.

TIFTON — Tiftarea Academy boys finished seventh in GISA Class AAA and the Lady Panthers were eighth at the state cross country meet Saturday in Macon. On the same date, Tift County’s boys and girls competed at Carrollton.

CHULA — The Tiftarea Academy Panthers have almost assuredly punched their tickets for the GISA Class AAA playoffs. They go to Valwood tonight looking for a bit possession in state and maybe a little more.

TIFTON — The final week of high school football’s regular season strangely may be the quietest in this area. Four teams are idle. Another plays a non-region game. Only one contest will likely have much impact on the upcoming state tournaments.

TIFTON — Both Tiftarea Academy and Tift County will compete at their respective organizations’ state cross country championships Saturday.

HOUSTON (AP) — A spare piece no more, Jorge Soler drove a pitch over the train tracks, out of Minute Maid Park and deep into the heart of Texas. He dropped his bat, tapped his chest twice and jabbed a hand toward the Atlanta Braves dugout.
