TIFTON – Tifton Police Chief Steve Hyman kicked off the department’s campaign for Lock it or Lose it during October.
The Lock it or Lose it campaign encourages city residents to lock their vehicles overnight to prevent possible theft.
Hyman said there have been 249 reports of theft concerning unlocked vehicles since Jan. 1 in the city.
“We have had a lot of entering autos this year in our neighborhoods,” Hyman said. “What we want to do is encourage everybody to take a second and think about locking up your cars and taking the valuables out of their cars.”
Hyman encourages residents to lock their garages and gates, to make sure people are not susceptible to theft of items on their property, because according to him, that is the only way his department can protect people’s property.
During the month-long campaign, the Tifton Police Department will post tips and advice through its Facebook page to help city residents ensure the safety of their property.
Hyman also noted this is not a unique campaign to Tifton, but many other places across the country are doing the same to help their residents protect valuable property.
