Salute to the Troops

The public is invited to join in the celebration Nov. 8 as Tifton celebrates veterans. The festivities will include a pancake breakfast, parade, festival, artists market, entertainment and fireworks. There will be something for everyone in the family to enjoy.

TIFTON – In honor of the men and women who have served the United States through military service and in memory of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, the city of Tifton and the Tifton-Tift County Tourism Association are hosting the second annual Veterans Day Celebration. This year, the day will be called “Tifton’s Tribute to the Troops,” and will be jam packed with activities for the whole family.

The public is invited to join in the celebration Nov. 8. The festivities will include a pancake breakfast, parade, festival, artists market, entertainment and fireworks. There will be something for everyone in the family to enjoy.

The day will kick off at 8 a.m. with a veterans pancake breakfast, sponsored by the Exchange Club of Tifton. The breakfast will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, located on the corner of Park Avenue and 4th Street. Veterans and children under five eat free. Guests are welcome and are $2 each. Also at 8 a.m., a veterans 5K run/walk will be held at Fulwood Park and sponsored by the All that Glitters dance troupe.

The day will continue with the second annual patriotic parade, which will kick off at 10 a.m. near Fulwood Park. The parade route will begin at Love Avenue and 10th Street. It will travel south on Love/Main to 3rd Street, turning left and traveling to Tift Avenue. Turning left on Tift, the parade will travel back to Fulwood Park.

Everyone is encouraged to decorate a float and participate in the parade. The entry fee is $20, if registered before Nov. 5 and $25 after the fifth or the day of. Veterans can participate in the parade for free. The public is also encouraged to line the streets in honor of all of our veterans.

Tyron Spearman, tourism coordinator, said, “It is important that we as a community remember and honor those who have sacrificed so that Americans can enjoy a better way of life. What better way than to celebrate all day with fun activities for the whole family.”

The celebration will continue at Fulwood Park and in downtown Tifton. The All that Glitters annual Fulwood Fall Frolic will begin at 11 a.m. in Fulwood Park. There will be arts and crafts vendors, entertainment, games, animals, rides, food and more. There will also be a flag ceremony, Veterans Memorial Wall and a time to honor veterans. The festival will end at 5 p.m. and is free to attend.

The Tifton Museum of Arts & Heritage will also be hosting the first Artists Market on Love, beginning at 11 a.m. The market, held inside the museum and on the grounds, will feature over twenty artists and fine crafters who will be offering their art for sale. Food and music will also enhance the event. Admission is free and the doors will open immediately following the parade.

Tifton’s Tribute to the Troops will continue Saturday evening with a patriotic music program on the Veterans Park stage in downtown Tifton. The day will be capped off with a spectacular fireworks show over downtown at about 6:30 p.m.

On Nov. 11, the annual Veteran’s Day program, including a guest speaker, will be held at Veterans Park in downtown.
