TIFTON — Out of 118 cities, Tifton was selected as the “Georgia Main Street of the Month” for the month of May.
With the announcement, Tifton will gain statewide notoriety as the featured community on the Georgia Main Street website and social media page.
Abbey McLaren, Tifton’s Downtown Development Authority director, says winning the award highlights the efforts of the Downtown Development Authority, The City of Tifton’s Main Street Program, and the Tifton Merchants Association.
“This award reflects the collaborative efforts that have been put into forward motion to create a revitalization movement and vibrant lifestyle in Downtown Tifton. We’ve hit a little bump with the COVID-19 crisis, but there are big things on the horizon,” McLaren said.
In 2019, there were 6 public improvement projects completed, 7 building rehabilitation projects, and 21 new or expanded businesses. These efforts added 79 new jobs to Downtown Tifton.
According to Georgia Main Street, the goal of the program involves building strong and vibrant communities.
The Georgia Main Street Program began in 1980 as one of the original pilot state-coordinating programs of the National Main Street Initiative launched by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Georgia program focuses on historic preservation, small business development, leveraging private development, and improving tourism.
Historic Downtown Tifton has been a part of the Main Street program since 1986.
