TIFTON —The Northside Baptist Church pastor, Fred Evers, has recently been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. He is undergoing chemo treatments but continues to preach on Sundays.

One of the members of the congregation, Mike Beeman, wanted to find a way to help his pastor beat cancer. He decided the best way to raise money and fundraise was to hold a charity race.

“When he [Fred Evers] told us the news about six weeks ago in church, he said ‘I’m going to let my congregation to help me,’” said Beeman.

Beeman has been a distance runner for over 40 years and has decided to organize a charity 5K and one mile fun run to raise money for Evers to beat cancer. The race will start and finish at Northside Baptist Church.

“I have put on or sponsored hundreds of races,” said Beeman. “So, [with] my experience in putting on a race God leads me to do this.”

To be in the race, participants must fill out an application and pay a $25 entry fee. Donations are encouraged and accepted but not mandatory for participation. All proceeds will go towards helping Evers get better.

People who just want to donate or want someone else to run in their place can fill out an application as a “ghost runner.”

There will be awards for the following areas: Overall male and female, overall masters male and female, 12 and under male and female, 13-19 male and female, 20-29 male and female, 30-39 male and female, 40-49 male and female, 50-59 male and female, 60-69 male and female, and 70-79 male and female.

Applications for the charity race can be picked up at the following locations: Northside Baptist Church. First Baptist Church, YMCA, Jones Construction, Hibbett Sports (by Big Lots), Southern Bodies, and Planet Fitness. Applications can also be filled out the day of the race.

Bring the application and money donation to the charity race on July 12, at Northside Baptist Church. The address for Northside Baptist Church is 4605 Murray Avenue. The 5K begins at 7 p.m. and the one mile fun run will begin after the 5K is over.
