TIFTON — The City of Tifton has welcomed many new businesses to the Tifton-Tift County Chamber of Commerce during the summer.
Two more joined the menu last week: Acres & Oak Kitchen and A Bag of Sweets.
Acres & Oak, which also operates locations in Macon and Perry, had a full house present as it officially opened its Brumby Way location July 15. A Bag of Sweets, located in the Tifton Mall, cut its ribbon July 16.
Termaine Shepherd fought back tears — happy tears, he said — while talking about opening A Bag of Sweets. Shepherd said he wanted something exciting for the mall.
“I wanted to bring something for the kids and the adults,” he said.
Shepherd said his nickname is “The Candy Man” from always having candy with him at church. “Why don’t I make it a passion of mine?” he said.
“I wanted to do this and God blessed me where I could do it. It wasn’t easy but it was worth it.”
A Bag of Sweets has been open for two weeks. Its hours are 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and noon-7 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Evan Acres, who owns the location with Erika Acres, celebrated the ribbon cutting with a toast. He said the chain has a reputation to uphold and wants customers to think of the business for events such as birthdays and the birth of children.
“We want to celebrate those things. We want to serve those who are around us,” Acres said. “The reason why we want to do that … we believe we were first served. We believe in the gospel. We believe in Jesus, we believe in the cross and what He has done for us and that is significant to our core.”
Acres said a prayer before the toast.
“Not only cheers to our business but cheers to this city. Cheers to things you guys are doing for this business and that’s going to look like, Lord willing, for years to come.”
