TIFTON -- A traffic stop led to a juvenile being charged with marijuana possession after police reported finding 11 bags of pot inside his shoe.
Around 9:56 p.m. Thursday, Officer Scott Bowers of the Tifton Police Department noticed that the driver of an Acura traveling on W. 11th Street was not wearing a safety belt. As Bowers closed on the car to make a traffic stop, he said that the driver put on his seat belt. The car was stopped near the intersection of 11th Street and S. Park Avenue.
Bowers and another officer approached the vehicle and the three occupants of the car were moving around as if they were trying to hide something. Bowers ordered the occupants to show their hands, but he said they ignored his commands. After several orders were issued, the driver and one passenger of the car raised their hands. The passenger in the rear showed reportedly continued to refuse and continued to attempt to conceal something.
The officers pulled their weapons, at which point all of the occupants raised their hands.
Back-up was called and another officer arrived and trained his gun on the car. Bowers said that the rear passenger again began moving around, prompting another command from the officers that the occupants show their hands. The occupants were taken out of the vehicle and handcuffed.
The car was searched and three cups containing an alcohol and orange juice mix were allegedly found with the contents spilled throughout the floorboard. Bowers said the occupants admitted to drinking alcohol at a party, but said the cups did not belong to them. There was also a half full bottle of orange juice. Bowers said two empty clear plastic bags commonly used for marijuana were also found near the driver's seat.
One of the occupants, a 16-year-old boy, was searched and Bowers said that Officer Shane Benefield felt a plastic bag in the boy's right shoe. He was told to remove the shoe and 11 bags of marijuana were allegedly found there.
The juvenile male was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of alcohol by a minor. The driver, Jarris Travonta Lindsey, 20, of Tifton, was charged with a seat belt violation and possession of alcohol by a minor. The other occupant, Larry Wayne Carithers, 20, of Tifton, was charged with possession of alcohol by a minor.
