A Tifton woman was charged Wednesday with bilking thousands from a local doctor’s office while serving as an employee.

Brenda Arrington, 49, of Tifton, has been charged with 23 counts of theft by taking. According to incident reports from the Tifton Police Department, Arrington admitted to her employer, cardiologist Dr. William Hancock, and his lawyer that over the past year she had written herself numerous checks ranging in value from $650 to $25,000. In total, according to the report, she is alleged to have stolen close to $50,000.

The report states that Arrington oversaw the office’s financial transactions and was able to cover up her alleged thefts by utilizing that position. Arrington also had signature rights on the office’s account with a local bank.

Thursday, Arrington bonded out of jail on a $24,000 property bond.
