TIFTON -- The City of Tifton will kick off Spring Fling events from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, April 25, with Kids Day in the Park in Fulwood Park's playground area. A variety of activities are planned for Customer Appreciation Week.
Three Kids' Zones at the park Monday will feature safety, fun and refreshments. In the Safety Zone, the fire department will sponsor the Fire Truck Fire Pup and children will receive lots of giveaways. Also in this zone, the emergency management agency will have Squad 6 and an ambulance displayed. The Tift County Forestry Commission will have a tractor-trailer forestry display and a bulldozer.
Children should also enjoy and learn from the Tift County Sheriff Department's McGruff DARE Lion and a drunk driving simulator as well as the Tifton Police Department's cruiser and fingerprinting demonstrations. The city's sanitation department will display heavy equipment, such as a front end loader.
Staff of the Tifton/Tift County Animal Shelter will present an animal safety program.
The Sylvester Fire Department will hold a smoke house demonstration and Lowe's Department Store will give away smoke alarms to adults and supply a craft area for children.
In the Fun Zone, kids can participate in games sponsored by the Tift County Recreation Department. Horse shoes, ring toss, hula toss, pennies in a sandpile for prizes, sack races and various game booths will be in operation.
A pet adoption display by the animal shelter and storytelling and library information sponsored by the Tifton-Tift County Public Library will also be on tap as well as costumed characters with balloons to give away. A sidewalk chalk area, a face-painting and sticker booth and two jumping castles should keep children busy.
Children may enjoy popcorn, ice cream and drinks at the Refreshment Zone.
A March for Meals will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Cato Knight Parking Lot. The event is being held to raise awareness of funds needed to pay for meals for Tifton's elderly. At 2 p.m., Mayor Paul Johnson is scheduled to speak about government to Abraham Baldwin College students.
At 7 p.m., a Volunteer Appreciation Banquet will be held at the Leroy Rogers Senior Center. The winners of an essay contest, coloring contest and the Dove Scholarship will be announced. The Volunteer of the Year Award will also be presented.
Administrative Professionals Appreciation Day will be celebrated Wednesday. An 11 a.m. ribbon cutting for a South Tifton project will also be held.
