TURNER COUNTY -- A couple from Tennessee are dead and another person injured after a head-on collision on Interstate 75 early Tuesday afternoon.

Officials at the scene reported that two cars were involved in the accident, a Ford F-250 Super Crew and a Chevy Tahoe. Both were totalled.

Witnesses say that the Ford was heading south when the SUV crossed the median and hit it. The Ford's driver was taken by ambulance to Tift Regional Medical Center, where his condition is unknown.

The couple, who were driving the Tahoe, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their bodies were taken to the state crime lab for identification.

Although the Georgia State Patrol is investigating the crash, units with the Turner County and Sycamore Fire Departments, Turner County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia Department of Transportation also responded.

The wreck backed traffic up for miles on the southbound side forcing DOT officials to detour traffic off the Interstate at exit 78 heading south to U.S. Highway 41 and continuing on into Tift County where traffic was re-routed back onto I-75 at Willis Still Road.

Advisories were issued as far north as Macon to warn travelers of the back-up in traffic.

However, DOT officials estimated that traffic was flowing again around 3 p.m.
