TIFTON -- The Abraham Baldwin basketball teams will travel to Atlanta Metro Thursday to take part in the first round of the Region XVII basketball tournament.

Head coach Robert Moore's Stallions will take on the Middle Georgia College Warriors at 3:30 p.m. They will be followed by the Fillies taking on Georgia Perimeter Lady Jaguars at 5:30 p.m.

A win by the Stallions will put ABAC in the semifinals on Friday against the winner of the Georgia Perimeter-Andrew game being played Wednesday. If the Fillies win, they would play the winner of the Atlanta Metro-Darton game in the semis on Friday. The Metro-Darton game will also be played Wednesday.

In their last regular season game Saturday, the Stallions were defeated 81-69 by Atlanta Metro. Rashad Williams had 14 points in that game, while Corey Johnson, Eric Williams and Carl Harrell each added 13.

"We had four players in double-figures, but we just could not hit our shots late," Moore said. "We were only four points down with three minutes left, but we could not get another bucket."

Even with the loss the Stallions finished the season with a 21-9 record, the school's best since 1982.

"We are very excited to have won that many games. I just wish we could have done better in the conference," Moore said.

Along with the 21-9 record, the Stallions placed two players on the All-Region team. That 10-player squad, voted on by the coaches, includes Rashad Williams and Eric Williams.

Ocilla's Corey Johnson was named to the five-player honorable-mention team.

"I am very proud and happy for those guys. They have worked hard and they deserve that honor," Moore said.

Head coach Julie Conner's Fillie team was also defeated Saturday by Atlanta Metro, 79-63.

Jasmin Lee led the team with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Other double-figure scorers were Chelsie Miller with 15 points and six rebounds, as well as Freda Cherry with 13 points and nine rebounds.

After winning just two games last season, the Fillies end the 2001-02 regular season with a 13-15 overall mark, 8-6 in the conference. That gave the Fillies the No. 3 seed in this week's conference tournament.

"I am extremely proud of all of our players. We have had a great year," said Conner.

The Fillies also placed two players on the All-Region team, Lee and Cherry. The sophomore duo was also picked to be among the three players nominated by the league to be considered for All-American honors.

"I want to congratulate them on a great year," Conner said.
