TIFTON – TIFT County Commissioner Melissa Hughes is back with another annual clothing drive for the children of Tift County.
She is collecting socks because the county has so many adults and children who go without socks on their feet because they can't afford them, she said.
Hughes organizes several annual clothing drives and other community fundraising activities year round.
"It takes a lot of work to grow this but every year the fundraisers do grow," Hughes said. "At the end of the drive every year I say to myself, 'I'm not doing it again next year,'" she said laughing with the members of the Tifton Exchange Club.
"Before the year begins though I always get a call from somebody saying they have socks or jackets for me to collect for the clothing drives next year and then I am back organizing it all for another year."
Hughes said she had to buy a utility house to store all of the extra donations she collects from around the community. What isn't used goes to storage for the next clothing drive. Hughes said everything donated always gets handed out to a family in need at some point.
To donate socks, people can find the drop-off boxes at the Charles Kent Administration Building.
