CORDELE — June 21-23, 2019 will mark Cordele’s 70th year celebrating the bountiful summer harvest with the “Watermelon Days Festival”.

Cordele’s Annual Watermelon Festival is a community event that will take place in downtown Cordele on 3rd & 2nd Street and the Georgia Veteran’s State Park. Adults and children of all ages are welcome to attend this fun-filled weekend and listen to live music on the first-ever Watermelon Festival stage.

The festival kicks off on Friday, June 21 with the Watermelon Walk at 7:30 a.m. at the Perry G. Busbee Walking Track. The Watermelon Gospel Sing will take place at Grace Baptist Church at 7 p.m. and the Ex”seed”ingly Excellent Talent Showcase will be at 119 W. 11th Ave at 7 p.m.

Saturday, June 22 will begin with the Watermelon Festival Parade starting at 8:30 a.m. The route will be 15th Avenue from 6th Street to Owens Street.

Watermelon Days Arts and Crafts will begin at 9 a.m. at Georgia Veterans State Park and there is a fee for participating.

The watermelon eating contest will be at 11:15 a.m., the watermelon chunking contest will be a 1 p.m. and the sweet melon and adult seed spit will be at 2 p.m. at Georgia Veterans State Park.

The Watermelon Horseshoe Tournament will be at 9 a.m. at Turner Park.

Crisp County 4-H will be giving out watermelon slices from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Georgia Veterans State Park.

The Watermelon Days Car and Truck Display will run from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and entertainment will go from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. at Georgia Veterans State Park.

Rides on the Historic SAM Shortline Railroad will be available on June 22. Visitors can contact 229-276-0755 for more information.

As part of the festival, hot air balloon rides will be available June 21-23 at Georgia Veterans State Park, weather permitting. Tethered rides are $10 per person and rides are $225 per person.

The day will wrap up with the Watermelon Days Dance at Cypress Grill. There is a fee to attend.

There is a $2 fee to park at Georgia Veterans State Park, which is located at 2459 U.S. 280 in Cordele.
