TIFTON — Though closing in on a definitive framework, Tifton City Council will take a little more time ironing out a plan for regulating the operation and initiation of package stores in the city.

A topic on the council's plate for several weeks, the proposed plan would control not only how many package stores could be situated in Tifton, but also facets of operation such as appearance, design, location and the distribution of licenses to conduct package sale.

Voters passed the Nov. 2 election referendum to authorize the issuance of these licenses and the city must now finalize a plan to make licensing work.

However, council has been uncertain of the proper way to fairly distribute the licenses. The most discussed solution has been the implementation of a lottery system that would randomly select suitable applicants to receive a license.

It was noted at the meeting that several other cities were struggling with finding a proper solution to the same conundrum but the City of Tifton could take advantage of this.

City officials are reviewing potential plans of other cities to develop the licensing method for Tifton.

The revised ordinance plan is expected to be brought before council again in January, giving the City of Tifton ample time to study and formulate a new plan.
