Betty Ruth Hogan Matthews

GAINESVILLE — Betty Ruth Hogan Matthews, 83, died peacefully Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, at the residence of David Matthews in Gainesville. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Chula Baptist Church. The Rev. David Matthews and the Rev. Chad Hall will officiate with burial to be held at Oakridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends and family from 3 until 8 p.m. today at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals.

Mrs. Matthews was born in Tifton and was the daughter of the late David Hiram Hogan and Mittie Lee Payne Hogan of Chula. She was married to Homer Matthews, who preceded her in death in 2003. She was an active member of Chula Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir in her earlier years.

She was a dedicated homemaker in her early years while raising her three boys. She and her husband, Homer, owned Georgia Printing Company, where she was active in the business community. Summer months were spent on the family farm with aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. It became such a special place, filled with memories because of Betty and Homer.

She was a very loving and caring person, who spent the years after her husband's death visiting the sick in the hospitals and nursing homes. She always carried herself with dignity and beauty and brought out the best in those who knew her.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, John Hogan, Rebecca Baltes, Louise Hiers, E. J. Hogan, David Hogan, Gene Hogan and Frances Aultman.

Mrs. Matthews is survived by her sister, Virginia Sedlick; and her three sons and their families, David and Cindy Matthews, and their children, Jessica and Jeremy; Jim and Vicki Matthews, and their children, Casey Matthews, Jamie Rogers, Brian Powell and Barry Powell; Ed and Lynn Matthews, and their son, Christopher.  She has 10 great-grandchildren.

Flowers will be accepted at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals; or in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chula Baptist Church, 30 Academy Drive, Chula, GA 31733; your favorite charity; or Helping Hands Foreign Missions, 1715 Cleveland Highway, Gainesville, GA 30501, designating Jessica Matthews. Jessica serves as a full-time missionary in Bolivia and sometimes Uganda, where the family established a church in Mr. Matthews' memory. Jessica's mission work was a favorite of Mrs. Matthews.

You may offer condolences to the family at the online guest registry at www.bowen-donaldson.com.

Arrangements for the Matthews family are under the care and direction of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals.
