12 DUIs, 17 crashes on holiday weekend


The Georgia State Patrol Post 13 issued 172 citations for the Thanksgiving holiday period, which began at 6 p.m. Wednesday and ended just before midnight Monday.

SFC Brian Gay, Tifton’s GSP post commander, said Post 13’s area of enforcement includes Tift, Berrien and Cook counties. He said 87 citations were issued for speeding, 21 for seat belt violations and 23 for child restraint violations. Also, troopers issued 331 warnings and made 12 arrests for driving under the influence and 385 traffic stops.

Gay said they investigated 17 crashes and one fatality, which was a single vehicle accident that occurred Sunday night on Georgia 7, north of Chula in Tift County.

According to the latest report on the Thanksgiving holiday traffic count for the state from the Georgia Department of Public Safety, troopers investigated 556 crashes that resulted in 244 injuries and 10 fatalities. Fifteen total fatalities were reported in Georgia. In 2012, 21 fatalities were reported statewide.

For the month of November, Post 13 investigated 51 traffic crashes in Tift County that resulted in 12 injuries and no fatalities. Gay said troopers also issued 83 traffic citations in the county during the month. The total includes 15 arrests for DUI, 83 citations for speeding, 23 seat belt violations and six child restraint violations. In addition, troopers issued 514 warnings and made 539 traffic stops in the county.

    A room full of local law enforcement and first responders were honored Thursday night by the Tifton Elks Lodge at their annual Public Safety Officer Appreciation and Awards Banquet for their service in the community.
    Prior to the awards being given out, Louise Spradley, who organized the banquet, welcomed everyone, and the invocation and pledge were led by the Tift County Sheriff's Office Honor Guard.
