Legendary story to be told Sunday in Story Quilts exhibit

TIFTON — The powerful life story of a Savannah man will be told March 16 in front of an enormous quilted textile depicting his inspiring approach to overcoming challenges.

To be told in the Tifton Museum of Arts and Heritage, the story of Waddie Welcome “is a Savannah legend, told and retold connecting people to the vision of a beloved community,” said Beth Mount, who created the quilt.

Mount will be in the museum for the event. Telling the story will be Tom Kohler, executive director of Chatham-Savannah Citizen Advocacy.

The boldly-colorful quilt, which is 129 inches by 114 inches, depicts Welcome and his friend Addie Reeves, surrounded by 16 squares symbolizing the Savannah squares and garden spaces.

“Like the Savannah gardens,” Mount said, “when the conditions that nurture goodness in relationships outweigh everything else, the potential in people blooms and ripens. The Waddie Welcome story brings us back to that treasured space between us in which wisdom and community grow.”

The 2 p.m. event continues the ancient art of storytelling as part of “A Season of Quilts,” three months of exhibitions and special events in two Tifton venues.

At 3 p.m. storyteller Jeanette Waddell will continue her residency by convening a story circle.

Participants will be coached in telling their own stories and appreciating the gift of story. All are welcome.

Mammoth quilts continue on exhibition in the downtown museum through March 22.

“A Season of Quilts: The Threads That Bind” is a collaboration between the Tifton Museum of Arts and Heritage, Diversified Enterprises and the Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village, with support from private patrons, Georgia Power, Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities, Georgia Microboards and the Tifton-Tift County Tourism Association.     

The exhibition of story quilts is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1-5 p.m., Thursdays from 1-7 p.m. and Sundays from 1-3 p.m.
