Three Devils make future plans

TIFTON — A trio of Tift County Blue Devil football players officially decided their futures Wednesday afternoon. Sam Douglas, Ryan Wedgeworth and Rashad Parks all inked scholarships at the Performing Arts Center, in an event emceed by their head coach, John Reid.

"We have numerous guys advancing on," Reid told the audience, adding that not only was he proud that they would get to advance their football careers and education but that they were good students and good citizens.

The first man to sign was defensive lineman Sam Douglas, who is going to Valdosta State. "He was our 'toughness' winner," said Reid. Douglas was injured midseason and missed games for the rest of the year. His coach said he was leaning towards studying sports medicine.

After switching out player jerseys and balloons to match future team colors, quarterback Ryan Wedgeworth sat behind the table with his family.

Wedgeworth, who Reid said rushed for nearly 1,000 yards and passed for more than 1,000. "He came a long way as a quarterback" and credited quarterbacks coach Chris Boden for helping to develop him.

The next stop for him will be Southeastern University of Lakeland, Fla., an NAIA school. "They're called the Fire and he's fired up," said Reid.

"I don't want any bad blood out there, Sam," he joked to Douglas during the ceremony for Rashad Parks.

Parks, a defensive tackle, caught the attention of Fort Valley State who had seen him on film. Reid smiled as he reminded everyone that FVSU and Valdosta State are annual opponents.

Noting that he had two defensive linemen signing, Reid also quipped to Mike Rozier, who coaches the position that "I'll have to give you more money next year."
