Walter Loyd Martin

ADEL — Walter Loyd Martin, 94, of Adel, passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at his residence. The Martin family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday at Boone Funeral Home, 1804 S. Hutchinson Ave., in Adel.  A graveside  funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Forest Hill Church Cemetery, 11323 Hwy. 37, in Adel with the Rev. Roger Mays officiating.

He was born August 20, 1919 in Ashburn, to the late James Austin and Mattie Cook Martin but was raised from an early age by the late William Blake and Sarah McMillan Martin. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Adel and was retired from Adel Trading Company where he worked as a salesman and was also the former owner of Sweigardt’s Auto Store.

He also served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. He was preceded in death by Evelyn Hayes Martin, his loving wife of 69 years, who passed away Feb. 1, 2014; six brothers, Clarence, Eston, Floyd, Joe, Jesse and Ray Martin; and four sisters, Bertie Barfield, Lorene Martin, Ada Grace and Mrs. Bill Whitney.

Mr. Martin is survived by his son, Jimmy Martin of Ray City; two daughters and a son-in-law, Sharon and Gene Hannon of Adel, and Marilyn Birge of Corpus Christi, Texas; five grandchildren, Scott Freeman of Adel, Regina Sumler of Lenox, Ronda Berry and Billie Jo Johnston, both of Corpus Christi, and Claudia Birge of Casper, Wyo.; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
