Tidal Wave prepare to host state meet

TIFTON — Tifton and Tift County will see an influx of athletes from around the state this weekend as the Tift County Recreation Department prepares to host the 2014 GRPA State Class B/C Swim Meet.

The Tiftarea Tidal Wave swim team will be hosting teams from 29 other agencies from aorund the state. The event which begins at 8:55 a.m. today will be held at the Baldwin Drive Aquatic Center in Tifton and will feature 709 swimmers from around the state.

To qualify for the state meet, swimmers had to finish in the top three in their respective events at district competitions.

The host Tidal Wave will be well represented as the team will have 75 total swimmers participating in the event. The only team with more participants will be the Douglas Stingrays with 107.

However, individual performances are more valued at the state meet, as no “team state champion” is officially crowned.

If you were to count team point totals, the Tiftarea squad finished sixth out of 16 teams last year.

Hosting the state meet is an exciting time for the Tift County Recreation Department, director Craig Sowell said.

“We want to thank the parents, volunteers and the community sponsors that help us with this each year,” said Sowell. “We also appreciate the assistance we get from other communities.”

The two-day event will see swimmers 7 to 10 years today, and 11-18 Saturday. Sowell said a lot of Tiftarea Tidal Wave swimmers will be veterans of state competition during the Saturday portion of the meet.
