Rants & Raves - July 8

TIFTON —

I would like to invite all of Tift County's parents to visit their student's classes during the day. As a 20-plus years teacher in the system I can testify to the fact that the educations of the well behaved are being negatively impacted by those who are not being held accountable for their own disruptive behavior. We can write them up, but nothing gets done. The inmates are running the asylums.

This is an offhand observation..the major industries in Tifton are: education, medical (hospital) and government. None of these entities pay property taxes. Everybody else is employed in service jobs to these entities and their employees. There are no larger industries for the tax base except citizens of Tifton and Tift County. This is why Tifton is worse off than a county with more industry and higher incomes. If you tax the latter to increase the income of the former it is called "unsustainable."

Rants & Raves is an excellent forum to air the BOE tax issue...you can tell the teachers from the administrators spouses and the fearless retirees who know real "suffering." This is far more revealing than any artificial "hearing" staged by the BOE.

Most of us happen to think that the Georgia Museum of Agriculture puts on the best Independence Day celebration around. The Tifton Tourism Association gives hotel tax funds to countless organizations in the Tiftarea and that does not automatically make them "tourist attractions." The museum, especially for the last several years, has become a prime educational institution. It is far from a tourist attraction. I am sure that celebrating Independence Day on July 3rd was well thought out. Our family had a blast.

Whining about taxes, especially local taxes, seems to be a favorite pursuit in R&R. Our Tea Party state government cut funding for education and the money needs to come from somewhere. Either that or we let education slide further downhill. I doubt that any elected official enjoys raising taxes but education in this country has already become a rather mediocre affair compared to other advanced countries.
