Varnell appointed to Tifton FUMC

TIFTON — The Rev. C. Benjamin "Benjy" Varnell, formerly the Waycross District superintendent, has been appointed to serve the First United Methodist Church in Tifton. Varnell replaces the Rev. Stephen Webb, who recently announced his retirement.

A graduate of Valdosta State University with bachelor's and master's degrees and a master's in Divinity from Emory, Varnell is currently on the Board of Worship, Committee on Investigation and the Board of Ordained Ministry for the South Georgia Conference.

Varnell’s most recent parish was the St. Simons Methodist Church where he preached in both the traditional and the contemporary style services. He has also served the congregations at the Park Memorial in Macon, Powersville-Wesley Chapel, Unadilla-Pinehurst, Millen, Folkston, Nashville, Swainsboro First and Douglas First.

Varnell and his wife Mary have two children: Matt, a teacher in Berkmar High School who is married to Trish and has two children, Liam (5) and Fischer (2); and Jack, who is pastor at Folkston United Methodist Church.

Varnell lists his interests as hunting, golf, watching classic movies and TV shows, crossword puzzles, reading (mostly theology) and music.
