Benson leads Veazey, Wood ahead of Jones in early tally

A crowd of locals gathered at Election Central, the old gym on the corner of Fourth Street and Chesnutt Avenue, Tuesday night after the polls had closed at 7 p.m. Supporters anxiously waited as the results updated on a projected screen on a nearby wall.

At press time, the unofficial results, with most of the precincts tallied, showed that Herbert Benson was pulling out ahead with 2,083 votes for Tift County State Court Judge while Patty Veazey garnered 1,924 votes. The seat is currently being held by Tift County State Court Judge Larry Mims, who had announced Jan. 9  that he would not seek re-election to the position that he has held since August 2000.

For Tift County Board of Education District 4, the top two candidates were Keith Barr with 303 votes and Richard Golden with 271 votes. Mark Bennett received 194 votes. The seat is currently being held by board member Rita Griffin, who decided not to seek re-election.

Also, two Tift County Commissioner seats were up for grabs this election. For the Tift County Commission District 4 race, Stan Stalnaker led with 424 votes while incumbent Sherry Miley garnered 341 votes.

For the Tift County Commissioner District 6 race, Greg Wood led with 396 votes and incumbent Mike Jones garnered 296 votes.

For the District 13 Senate seat, Bryce Johnson led with 1,926 votes while Greg Kirk garnered 1,084 votes. The seat is currently being held by Sen. John Crosby, who announced in November that he would not seek re-election.

Editorial Note: At press time, the results at three precints had not yet been tallied in Tift County. We will have final results online Wednesday at www.tiftongazette.com and in Thursday’s edition.
