Bass Busters record set, then broken

TIFTON — The Tifton Bass Busters trailered their boats for Lake Seminole on May 10 for a day of fishing. Little did they know the event would shake up the record books for the 30+-year-old club.

The lake proved to be very friendly for a couple of the anglers.

David Pettis was spotted in various locations along Fish Pond Drain during the day. It would prove to be a good area, as he brought in the five-fish limit to the scales.

Veteran Bass Buster Chad McMurrian went to the Chattahoochee arm of the lake, where he had located fish earlier. His efforts were also rewarded with a five-fish limit of bass, which he caught using a spinner bait.

When the duo had their fish weighed at 4:30 p.m., they created quite a stir. McMurrian, whose fish were weighed in early, had his bag total 22 pounds 7 ounces. The old records have been lost, but other vets remembered the best number to be 18 pounds.

The celebration at the new mark would be short-lived, as Pettis brought his fish to the scales. He had two weigh-in bags. One held three fish and the other held two, totaling 29.47 pounds of largemouth bass. Pettis said his bait was Hollow Bodied Frog and reportedly he left Lake Seminole saying, "it's (Lake) Oconee next and I've still got some frogs."
