Charlton slips by Irwin in semis, 34-33

Blocked kick decides final score

OCILLA — After defeating the Charlton County Indians, 29-26, on a last second field goal on Nov. 6, the Irwin County Indians saw a kick again decide their fate against Charlton.

The result was a 34-33 victory for Charlton and allowed Charlton to advance to the state Class A public school state championship game Dec. 14 at the Georgia Dome against Marion County.

After scoring a touchdown on a 3 yard run by Antwuane Marritt with 4 seconds left in the game to make the score 34-33, Eric Contreras' attempt for the point after was blocked and Charlton held on for the win.

Charlton was led by sophomore running back Andrew Lee, who had 24 caries for 228 yards and scored 4 touchdowns. Charlton had 289 yards as a team.

Irwin was led by Merritt, 21 carries for 158 yards, and Robert Moore, 19 carries for 107 yards.

The Ocilla Indians had 360 yards total.
