Chaplain Andrew Lane Miles Sr.

LYONS — Chaplain Andrew Lane Miles Sr., retired, 88, of Lyons died Wednesday, Dec. 04, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Oaks Baptist Church in Lyons with the Rev. Josh Hughes officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Metter. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday at Oaks Baptist Church.

He attended ABAC in Tifton. He was a native of Candler County and graduated from Metter High School in 1944. Afterwards, he graduated from the University of Georgia and the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary with a master's of Divinity. He has lived in Lyons since 1965. He was a United States Navy Veteran, aboard the LSM 450 until the war ended in 1945. He was ordained to the Baptist Ministry in 1953 and pastored Broad Street Baptist in Hawkinsville, Britt David Baptist in Columbus, and Cool Springs Baptist Church. He served as clinical chaplain with the Georgia Baptist Convention and the Georgia Department of Corrections for 30 years before retiring in 1989. He was a charter member of the Oaks Baptist Church in Lyons.

Mr. Miles Sr. is survived by his wife of 64 years, Goolene Kent Miles of Lyons; one daughter, Melisha Gilreath and husband Ron of Roswell; one son, Andrew L. Miles Jr. and wife Charlotte of Claxton; five brothers, James Miles and Bobby Miles both of Tifton, Hubert Miles of Pulaski, Billy P. Miles of Flintstone, and Harold Miles of Augusta; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
