Area schools going to girls state track meet

TIFTON —  Albany's Hugh Mills Stadium won't be in use for just one set of girls state track finals this weekend. Several other area schools will be participating in the annual event, sending anywhere from one individual to eight. The meet starts today and runs through Saturday.

Berrien and and Irwin County each have a lone representative for the school colors. Turner County and Cook each have four and Fitzgerald is the one with eight. The Lady Canes, though possessing the biggest number, will not have the widest amount of events. Cook's athletes have all qualified in individual events, though two of them have two qualifiers.

The Lady Hornets from Adel doubled up in the triple jump and long jump. Mikayla Henley and Lakeyda Zackery will be in both of those. Zackery's triple jump distance of 35'10.25" in the sectionals was the third best of anyone in the state. Santajah Booker will be going in the high jump and Antwanisha Hill will be running in both the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles. She was 2nd in the latter in 2013.

Half of Fitzgerald's representation will be with their 4x100 relay team, composed of Kennedy Allen, Markeela Bozeman, Imani Jones, Breandra McDuffie and Zoya Slacks. Allen will also be seen in the 100-meter hurdles and McDuffie is in the 100-meter dash. Pole vault has a double dose of Lady Canes with Alex Wallace and Leah Ward, with Ward hoping to improve her runner-up status from last year. Myrical Lewis competes in the 400-meter dash.

Turner County returns a bit of experience from the previous state meet. Keyanna Dawson was 3rd in the long jump last year and has qualified again. She will also compete in the 100-meter dash. Mylashia Yancey will also have two events to try, the high jump and 400-meter dash. Ebony Hicks will also be in high jump and Taylor Daniels will throw the shot put.

Lady Indian Dacia Graham, who was in the state high jump competition last year, is in again in 2014 for Irwin.

Danielle King, running in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dash, is the single Berrien Rebelette running in Albany.

Worth County was the only area school not to send anyone to the girls meet.

Field events wrap up Friday, track events Saturday.
