Lady Indians make the Elite Eight in tennis

OCILLA — A year after playing for a state championship in public school Class A tennis, the Irwin County Lady Indians continue to progress in this year’s tournament.

Coach Luke Roberts’ team defeated Mitchell County, 5-0, Monday in the opening round. The win puts Irwin in the Elite Eight Friday at 1 p.m. against visiting Commerce.

In the match against MItchell County, Maddie Carlton won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2, Alex Rhodes won by forfeit, and at No. 3, Summer Pridgen won, 6-2, 6-1.

At No. 1 doubles, sisters Jordan and Jayden Jankiewicz won by a 6-0, 6-0 score. At No. 2, the duo of Kaley Youghn and Maggie Martin won 6-1, 6-1.

Irwin won the Area 1 title this year. Other members of the team are Payton Posey, Abi Walker and Rebecca Paulk.

Unfortunately the news was not as good for the Indians in the opening round of the state, as Irwin was defeated 3-2 by Baconton Charter.
