Devils qualify for track championships

TIFTON — Familiar surroundings proved to be quite hospitable for the Tift County Blue Devil track teams Saturday afternoon. One of two hosts for the Class AAAAAA sectionals, they qualified several for the upcoming state championships, according to official finishes posted at the event.

Field events took up nearly the entire morning and part of the early afternoon. By the time those had ended, five had punched their tickets for further competition. Another individual and a team qualified on the track that afternoon.

It was a clean sweep for Staceyanna Murrell in her two events. The senior had the top distance in both shot put and discus. Her shot distance was 37'11” and she had 125'02” in the discus. Also making it was Quasha Fergerson in the shot, with a distance of 34'9.”

Katie Utley walked away with the girls pole vaulting championship. Her height was 11 feet. The Blue Devils also had their lone qualifier in the event. Dalton Ellis' 10'6” was good enough to just make it.

Sky Moore will be going 400-meter dash, by a nose. She was the 8th fastest runner in the event, with a time of 1:01.26. In the final event of the night, Tift’s boys 4x400 relay team had unofficially qualified for state, coach Alonzo Hampton said. They finished third in their individual heat.

Full results for events involving Blue Devils will be published at a later date.

The girls championships take place next weekend at Hugh Mills Stadium at Albany. The boys will have to wait two weeks for their finals at Jefferson.
