Man arrested in connection with March shooting

FITZGERALD — A Wilcox County man who was wanted in connection to a March shooting incident in Fitzgerald that resulted in a juvenile being injured has been arrested.

Fitzgerald Police Chief William Smallwood said Robert (Bobby) Haynes Jr., 40, of Wilcox County was arrested Thursday night by the Wilcox County Sheriff's Office. He's currently being housed in the Ben Hill County Jail on a charge of aggravated assault with other charges pending. Smallwood noted more arrests will be made.

According to a previous Gazette article about the March incident, Fitzgerald police officers responded that Sunday night to the 500 block of West Pine Street in reference to a fight in the alley. Upon arriving on the scene, 911 informed officers that there had actually been a shooting. A fight had occurred an hour earlier in the alley between two people.

Smallwood told The Gazette that following the fight, the incident escalated to the individuals coming back with six or seven people to start another fight. A vehicle dropped off two people at the other end of the alley, and one of them started firing. During this time, a 14-year-old girl was struck in the face with bullet fragments. A 15-year-old male was arrested in connection to the crime. He was charged with aggravated assault.
