Billy D. Shiver


Billy D. Shiver, 84, of Baconton died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at the Rehab Center of South Georgia in Tifton. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Cool Springs Baptist Church in Sale City with interment at the church cemetery. The Rev. Jeff Barker will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Griffin, Terry Lee, Jake Williams, Brenton Shiver, Clayton Shiver, Zachary Shiver and Cutler Shiver.
Born Jan. 24, 1930 in Mitchell County, Mr. Shiver was a member of Baconton Baptist Church, where he served as deacon for many years. He worked with Merck Chemical Co. as a machinist/millwright for more than 33 years. He was the son of the late General Lee and Effie Blackburn Shiver and was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Shiver.
Survivors include his wife, Vernita Hardin Shiver of Baconton; three sons, Barry Shiver (Lindsey) of Watkinsville, Bruce Shiver (Kristie) of Tifton and David Shiver (Terri) of Chula; two brothers, Robert Shiver of Lakeland, Fla. and Donald Shiver of Liberty, N.C.; and six grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 315 W. Second St., Tifton, GA 31794.

    LEOs and first responders honored at banquet

    A room full of local law enforcement and first responders were honored Thursday night by the Tifton Elks Lodge at their annual Public Safety Officer Appreciation and Awards Banquet for their service in the community.
    Prior to the awards being given out, Louise Spradley, who organized the banquet, welcomed everyone, and the invocation and pledge were led by the Tift County Sheriff's Office Honor Guard.
