Bulldogs continue bowl practice in full pads

ATHENS — The 23rd-ranked Georgia Bulldogs conducted their fourth bowl practice Wednesday in Athens.

After the two-hour practice in full pads, Georgia coach Mark Richt said this year the way the calendar fell, the Bulldogs have been able to focus strictly on bowl practice this week.

“Some years, it’s exams, the gala, putting in the game plan, studying the game plan, recruiting, bowl practice, but this week it’s been nice with just practice,” Richt said. “We can go practice in the middle of the day, and it’s worked out great.”

Richt commented on the move of freshman flanker Tramel Terry to safety.

The 6-0, 184-pound native of Goose Creek, S.C., missed the regular season while recovering from a knee injury that occurred during a high school all-star game. Along with playing defense, Terry will get a look as a returner in the spring too, Richt added.

“Tramel has a good body type for that, and he’s all for it so that’s what we’re doing,” Richt said. “Right now, we think that’s best for him, and he feels good about it. The defensive coaches kept an eye on him and coveted him. They liked what they saw in him as a safety prospect. For right now and in the spring, his reps will be with the defense.”

The Bulldogs (8-4) have seven scheduled sessions in Athens, which are set to conclude on Dec. 21.

Then, they will take a four-day break for the holidays. Georgia will reconvene in Jacksonville on Dec. 26 to begin final preparations for the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl against Nebraska (8-4) on Jan. 1.

The Bulldogs will be making their 49th appearance in a bowl game, and they sport a record of 27-18-3. Georgia is 2-0-1 in previous trips to Jacksonville for the Gator Bowl. Georgia’s last appearance at the Gator Bowl came in 1989, a 34-27 win over Michigan State. Last year, the Bulldogs capped their season with a 45-31 victory over the Cornhuskers in the Capital One Bowl in Orlando.

ESPN2 will broadcast the Georgia-Nebraska game with kickoff set for noon ET on Jan. 1 at EverBank Field.
