John Scott Summerlin

TIFTON — John Scott Summerlin, 48, of Tifton died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013. A memorial service will be held at 4  p.m. today in the sanctuary of Tifton's First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Stephen Webb will officiate.

Mr. Summerlin was born July 31, 1965 in Douglas and will be remembered as a devoted father, loving husband, brother, son and loyal friend.

Mr. Summerlin was the salutatorian of the Atkinson County High School class of 1983. He graduated summa cum laude from Valdosta State College with a degree in Finance in 1987.  While in college, he served as the treasurer of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.  He obtained a juris doctor of Law degree from the University of Georgia Law School in 1990.

After working for the Vaughan, Davis, Birch and Murphy law firm in Atlanta, he returned home to Pearson and served as general counsel and vice president of the Citizens Exchange Bank.

Mr. Summerlin is survived by his wife of 23 years, Karen Holbrook Summerlin and their children, John Collin and Anna Olivia, his parents, Jeannie and Robert A. Summerlin, his sister Meg "M" Summerlin and her husband Warren A. Tyre, his wife's parents, Jo Ann and Lamar Holbrook, his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lori and Jeff Polofsky and nephews Alex and Grant Polofsky.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial gifts may be made to the Tift County High School Booster Club or the Tift County High School Competition Cheer Booster Club, 1 Blue Devil Way Tifton, GA 31794. Condolences may be sent to the family at the online guest registry at www.bowen-donaldson.com. Services for the Summerlin family are under the care and direction of the Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals.

    LEOs and first responders honored at banquet

    A room full of local law enforcement and first responders were honored Thursday night by the Tifton Elks Lodge at their annual Public Safety Officer Appreciation and Awards Banquet for their service in the community.
    Prior to the awards being given out, Louise Spradley, who organized the banquet, welcomed everyone, and the invocation and pledge were led by the Tift County Sheriff's Office Honor Guard.
