Lady Indians back in championship

TIFTON — The Irwin County Lady Indians are headed back to the Class A state tennis championships. They defeated the Lady Blazers of Baconton Charter Tuesday, 3-2 in the state semifinals played in Camilla.

Two early losses by Maddie Carlton and Alex Rhodes at No. 1 and No. 2 singles put Irwin down by two, but they would rally.

No. 1 doubles, Jordan and Jadyn Jankiewicz, defeated their opponents 6-4 and 6-2. Baconton had a lead in the other doubles contest of 2-1, but Kaley Youghn and Maggie Martin came back to win 6-2, 6-1. This tied the match 2-2 and the Lady Indians' fate fell to Summer Pridgen.

Pridgen's first set went to a tiebreaker after both players won six games. She won that, 7-0, to take the set. The second one was nearly as close and after several rallies, she prevailed 6-4, to clinch the match for Irwin.

The Lady Indians will play Gordon Lee Saturday in the finals at Clayton County International Park. Gordon Lee defeated Telfair County, 3-2, to make it to the final match.
